The garden that turns into a jungle the moment you look away

It’s one of the most common shocks for anyone buying a villa on the Costa Blanca. You arrive picturing a calm garden of palms and bougainvillea, and discover that in March and April everything grows at a speed you’ve never seen. The lawn you left cut is knee-high in three weeks, the hedges lose their shape, weeds push up through the gravel and the bougainvillea eats into the neighbour’s fence.

Many of our clients live outside Spain for most of the year and come home to find the garden overrun. Recovering one like that is usually a two-to-four-day job: general clearance, hard pruning of hedges and shrubs, cutting and cleaning palms, hauling away several trailer-loads of green waste and, from there, a regular maintenance plan so it doesn’t happen again. Routine upkeep every two to four weeks always works out cheaper and far better-looking than recovering a neglected garden.

What we do

Regular garden maintenance, the most requested package. A visit every one, two or four weeks depending on size and season, with lawn mowing, edge trimming, weed removal, light hedge and shrub pruning, leaf blowing and removal of all green waste. We step the frequency up in spring, when everything grows, and ease it off in high summer and winter.

Pruning and trimming of hedges, shrubs and small trees, shaping them and holding whatever height you want, plus the cutting and cleaning of palm trees, very typical here. Irrigation work: installation, programming and repair of automatic drip and sprinkler systems, a key piece in this dry climate.

Pressure washing of terraces, porches, paths and driveways, which on the Costa Blanca pick up dust, green algae and stains fast. And general exterior upkeep of the villa: gravel paths, garden furniture, fences, outdoor lighting and everything that surrounds the house and garden.

What we do

The Mediterranean garden: dry climate, harsh sun and scarce water

The Costa Blanca climate dictates everything you do in a garden. Long, dry, very hot summers, with little rain between May and September and a sun that punishes a traditional lawn. A garden designed for northern Europe, with lots of grass and soft-leaved plants, drinks an enormous amount of water and suffers in July and August. That’s why more and more clients go for a low-water garden: decorative gravel, Mediterranean planting (lavender, rosemary, oleander, cacti and succulents), palms and olive trees.

Irrigation is therefore the heart of the garden here. Without a well-programmed automatic system the garden won’t survive summer, and with a badly set one you waste a huge amount of water and the bill spikes. We adjust controllers by season, check drippers and sprinklers, and fix leaks, which on old buried systems are very common.

Wind and dust matter too. Saharan dust and calima leave a fine layer over terraces, furniture and leaves; salt air near the coast attacks metal and wood. So exterior upkeep and regular terrace cleaning aren’t a luxury, they’re what keeps the property presentable, especially for a holiday rental with a constant stream of guests checking in and out.

Built for foreign residents and remote owners

Many of our clients are British, Belgian, Dutch, German or Ukrainian residents who spend stretches away and want the garden and exterior cared for whether they’re home or not. We work with a multilingual team, so you can deal with us in Spanish, English or French with no misunderstandings about what needs doing.

For remote owners we offer scheduled maintenance with notices before and after each visit and, if you ask, photos of the garden so you can see how it looks. For holiday rentals we slot visits between bookings, so the terrace, pool and garden are spotless at every check-in. Verified professionals, response within around two hours, a 30-day guarantee on the work and clear quotes with no surprises.

They look after our garden all year even though we spend six months in England. They come every fortnight, send us photos, and the house is always perfect when we get back.

FAQ

How often should the garden be maintained?

In spring, when everything grows fast, every one or two weeks is ideal. In summer and winter you can stretch it to every three or four weeks. We tune it to the garden size and whether it’s a holiday let.

Do you take the green waste away?

Yes, removal and transport of green waste to a recycling point or licensed handler is included in the quote. For large clearances the cost of extra trailer-loads is stated before we start.

Can you look after the garden when I’m not in Spain?

Yes, it’s one of our most common services. We work with remote owners with notices before and after each visit and photos of the result on request. Remote payment and coordination are no problem.

Is it worth switching to a low-water garden?

In this climate, almost always. Decorative gravel, Mediterranean plants and drip irrigation cut water use and maintenance a lot, and ride out summer without suffering. We advise with no obligation.

Do you install and repair automatic irrigation?

Yes, we install drip and sprinkler systems, program the controller by season and fix leaks, drippers and sprinklers. On old buried systems leaks are very common and are located with an inspection.

Is the quote free?

Yes, completely free and no obligation. We make a prior visit to see the garden, measure hedges and surfaces and give you a fixed price. If you decide not to engage us, you pay nothing.
