Houses that stay closed for months

In Muro de Alcoy and its hamlets, Turballos, Setla de Nunyes or Benàmer, many village houses and country cottages are used seasonally. Their owners live in Alcoy, in Valencia or further away, and come up at weekends and in summer. A house shut for several months has its own set of faults: the water heater starting up with a scaled element, a tap that has been dripping since winter, the smell of dry traps, the breaker tripping the moment the power goes on.

That is why much of our work here is requested by people who are not in town during the week. We agree the visit, let ourselves in with the key the owner or a neighbour leaves us, and send photos of what we find before touching anything.

Stone and thick walls

The old centre of Muro keeps houses with wide walls, the rising damp that is typical of the area, and drainpipes patched up over decades. When a bathroom or kitchen renovation comes round, something almost always turns up behind the tiles. So the quote is closed after the visit, never over the phone.
