Winter is real here

Alcoy sits at around seven hundred metres, between the Sierra de Mariola and the Font Roja, and that reverses the order of priorities compared with the coast. In Torrevieja the peak of calls is July and it is air conditioning. Here the peak is November and it is boilers that will not fire, radiators cold across the bottom half, and thermostats out of calibration after seven months idle.

A boiler serviced in October costs what a service costs. The same boiler failing in the first cold week, with every engineer in the comarca stretched, costs considerably more and waits considerably longer. It is the one piece of maintenance advice we give unprompted.

An old centre of tall, narrow buildings

Much of central Alcoy went up during the textile boom of the late eighteen hundreds and early nineteen hundreds: four to six storeys, narrow, many without a lift, with tightly turning stairs. It is well-built stock, but with services patched in layers over a century, and with a very concrete consequence for any trade: some materials will not go up.

We say so at the survey rather than discovering it on day one. A bath, a one-piece worktop or certain kitchen units are handled differently in a building with no lift, and that carries a cost we would rather put in the quote from the start.
