Two jobs that are not the same
Swapping the bath for a walk-in shower while keeping the layout is a two to four day job. As a guide, between €1,800 and €3,200 with new tiling to shower height, depending on the state of the installation.
A full renovation of a four to six square metre bathroom, with sanitaryware, units, floor and walls, runs between €4,500 and €8,000 depending on finish. They are two different quotes and it is worth not mixing them when you ask.
What shows up once the tiles come off
What really moves the figure is what cannot be seen from outside. Lead pipework in anything built before the seventies. Soil stacks shared with the neighbour sitting where nobody expected. Damp that has been building behind the bath panel for years.
We spot what we can at the survey. When we cannot, we say so before starting: if it appears, work stops, you are shown photos and you decide. That is very different from receiving an extra halfway through.
The waste pipe is what governs
In the sixties and seventies blocks of Torrevieja or Elche, the waste is almost never where the layout in your head would need it. Moving a toilet by a metre sounds minor and is what makes a bathroom renovation dearer than anything else.
If the layout stays, the quote is predictable. If it moves, it needs discussing with numbers before anything is drawn.
What you decide and what we decide
Tiles, taps, units and the screen are yours, and they can double the price without changing an hour of labour. Waterproofing, fixing method and how the waste is handled are ours, and there is no cheap option there that ends well.
Redoing the waterproofing before retiling is exactly what stops damp appearing in the next bedroom two years later.
Permissions and timescales
Changing a bathroom without touching structure or facade almost always counts as minor works, and in most Vega Baja municipalities it goes through a declaración responsable. It is quick, but it has to be filed.
On timescales, allow five to ten working days if the bathroom stays where it is. If the layout changes or the pipework turns out to be poor, two or three days more.
